A swinging, sunny, Saturday afternoon!
The weather forecast was sunny and bright so it was a good omen for the first Ladies Swing Band gig. As ladies one of the most important factors is what to wear so we decided our theme for this show was going to be flowers, so we all had to co-ordinate and wear a flowery top.
Mary Lane is a friend of Ninas’s and each year she opens her garden for friends to come and help with fund raising to buy mosquito nets and other essentials for the children in Mbale, Uganda - (The charity is U give 2 Uganda) by partaking of a cream tea and other fun activities including guessing the name of the bear, the number of smarties in a jar, books and a tombola. Last year she raised over £2000.
The Ladies Swing Band has 12 members and we have been practicing once a month for about 8 months and after a few false starts we now have go 4 pieces under our belt including a couple of Cole Porter’s numbers. We are a bit short of brass players and due to Emily having to work that afternoon Alan very kindly donned his flowery shirt and played Baritone Sax for us. We asked the Saturday Windband to join forces with us to finish on our version of the Blues Brothers and though we only had a token cornet (courtesy of Kate’s son George) it sounded pretty good and got the best applause of the afternoon.
We are planning more numbers and hopefully our next gig won’t be too far off……….
